GE Dishwasher Error Codes: Common Problems and Easy Fixes

GE Dishwasher Error Codes

A dishwasher that stops mid-cycle and flashes letters at you isn’t broken beyond hope. It’s communicating. GE dishwasher error codes are built-in diagnostics that point to a specific fault, from a clogged drain to a heating failure. Because each code narrows the problem down, you can often skip the guesswork entirely. However, ignoring a code is a different story. A drain fault left alone can flood your kitchen floor, and a heating fault means dishes that never actually get sanitized. So it pays to act quickly.

How to Reset a GE Dishwasher

Before anything else, try a reset. Seriously. Plenty of codes are one-time glitches.

Power reset

Press Start or Reset, then wait while the unit drains. About two minutes, usually. If the code hangs around after that, hold the button down for five seconds and let go. Most GE models will drop a minor fault right there.

Circuit breaker reset

Panel completely frozen? Then go deeper. Kill the power at the breaker, count out a full minute, and flip it back. Because this reboots the control board from scratch, whatever glitch was stored in its memory usually goes with it.

Common Causes of Error Codes

Clogged filter or drain

This one causes more service calls than everything else combined. Food scraps and grease build up in the filter until water simply can’t get through, and then the drain codes start.

Water supply problems

An H2O code rarely means anything exotic. Usually the shut-off valve under the sink got bumped, or the supply line has a kink in it. A worn inlet valve can also choke the flow, even when the supply looks fine.

Faulty heating system

Wash water should hit roughly 120 degrees Fahrenheit. When the element burns out or the thermistor lies about the temperature, C5, C6, or C7 shows up. Cold water in. Dirty dishes out.

Electronic control board issues

Rare, but real. The board runs every sensor, so a damaged one throws codes that contradict each other, and no amount of filter cleaning will fix that. Honestly, this is a dishwasher repair job for someone with a multimeter and the wiring diagram.

Simple Troubleshooting Steps

Check the water supply

Confirm the valve under the sink is turned fully open. While you’re down there, run a finger along the supply line and feel for kinks or drips.

Clean the filter

Pull the bottom rack out and twist the filter assembly free. Rinse it under hot water, scrub it with a soft brush, and lock it back in. Most GE dishwasher drain codes clear right here. Five minutes, honestly.

Inspect the drain hose

Kinks and clogs love the spot where the hose meets the disposal, so check there first. Also, if you installed a new disposal recently, make sure the knockout plug came out. It’s a classic mistake.

Reset the dishwasher

After the physical checks, run one more power reset. If the code comes straight back, the fault is real, and it may be time to book a dishwasher repair visit.
